Unlocking the keys to longevity

It seems like everywhere you turn right now, someone is touting the magic recipe for living longer or finding the fountain of youth — superfoods, turbo-charged supplements, full-body screening tests, scientific workouts, self-fulfillment workshops, high-tech
cosmetic creams. The list is endless.

But when it comes to healthy aging, more and more experts are advising a back-to-basics approach of a good diet, regular exercise and everything else in moderation.

That’s why we wanted to introduce you to some Idahoans who are working not just to live longer, but to live balanced lives. From teenage cross-country runner Eric Fitzpatrick to Idaho first lady Lori Otter to 100-year-old Boisean Vic Whetzel, these folks are committed to making the most of every day in an active, healthy way.

New studies have found that life spans today are often decades longer than those of our ancestors. Chances are, you’ll want those extra years you’ve been gifted with to be good ones.

So if you are trying to get on track to a healthier life, today is a good day to start taking small steps. You don’t have to change everything all at once. Just start gradually. Do one thing differently until that becomes a habit. Vow to take a short walk each day. Add an apple to your lunch bag. Volunteer for a good cause.

No one is going to pretend that we can stop every bad thing from happening to us, but a healthier you is going to be better suited to take on life’s challenges. It isn’t about perfection — it’s about being prepared.

You can make smart choices that count!
