Expert: Neuroscience

At the Idaho Neurological Institute (INI), advanced technology is placed in the hands of a caring and compassionate staff, comprised of highly qualified clinicians trained in a variety of sub-specialties: neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuroanesthesiologists, traumatologists, physiatrists, psychiatrists, intensivists, vascular surgeons, neuro-certified nurses and other healthcare professionals who provide patients with exceptional care. A continuum of neurological care services are provided through the coordination of human, technologic, and financial resources which meet the unique physical, psychological and spiritual needs of each neurologically impaired patient. Neurological illness or injury can occur at many levels, from sleep disorders to disabling stroke to traumatic head injury. Our ultimate goal is to return each individual to an optimum level of physical and intellectual function.

Stroke

The Idaho Neurological Institute stroke care services provide an aggressive, streamlined team approach to stroke care. The team consists of emergency room physicians, hospitalists, internists, intensivists, neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, physiatrists, neurosurgeons, other physician specialties, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians and respiratory therapists.

Saint Alphonsus is proud to be the only Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center in the state of Idaho. The distinction as a Primary Stroke Center means that the Idaho Neurological Institute at Saint Alphonsus offers the best possible care for stroke patients. Treatment for stroke is based on the American Stroke Association and the Brain Attack Coalition recommendations. The Stroke Program is founded on nationally recognized standards that include: highly educated and trained stroke care staff, protocols for streamlined stroke care from the Emergency Department to outpatient therapy, minimizing complications from stroke, and improving outcomes for a better quality of life.

Spine

The Idaho Neurological Institute has implemented a program for the comprehensive management of spinal diseases and disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including spinal deformities, fractures, infections, tumors and arthritis. Physicians within the INI engage in ongoing clinical research to explore and substantiate advances in operative and non-operative methods of diagnosis and treatment of spinal problems. They have extensive experience in the treatment of spinal degenerative disease (such as lumbar spinal stenosis) and traumatic disorders and deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis).

The INI also uses minimally invasive techniques, as well as a full range of spinal instrumentation procedures performed for stabilization of degenerative, neoplastic and traumatic etiologies. Spinal cord tumors, vascular malformations and spasticity are treated in collaboration with specialists in those areas.

Additionally, the INI brings together a dedicated, widely recognized core of spinal care professionals to offer the highest quality of state of the art care for conditions affecting the adult and pediatric spine. The INI offers surgical and non-surgical care for all conditions affecting the spine.

Research

The INI sponsors an internationally recognized brain and neural injury research program. This program focuses on advancing knowledge of brain injury, plasticity and repair, with the goal of continually improving patient care, outcomes and support systems.

The INI research program is also committed to education, and fosters training programs for student researchers by working in partnership with Boise State University. Through this collaboration, many national scientific reports have been presented, and the INI has been honored several times for Excellence in Research.
